Former ship-watcher’s cabin

One of the most important roles of the Hyogo Administrative Office was to keep watch on any ships navigating the sea off Cape Wada. A small building known as a funami-bansho, or ship-watching office, was set up along the coast with two ship-watchers. Like the guarding of the nagaya-mon gate, this role was performed by two ashigaru servants who would alternate shifts. This cabin, a double nagaya structure, was the ship-watchers lodgings. When the building was taken over by the first Prefectural Office, the role of the ship-watchers was withdrawn.
